The area of the Royal Square (Place Royale) was once occupied by the ancient Coudenberg Palace, which was destroyed by a fire in 1731.
The idea of recovering the area of the rubble was brought about by governor Charles, who took inspiration from the neoclassical style of Vienna. During some excavation works in 1995 the ruins of the ancient palace re-emerged, in particular the part corresponding to the Aula Magna, which are kept today inside the Belvu Museum.
Despite the chaos and traffic which surround the square today, still it preserves a refined look, thanks to the presence of numerous neoclassical pastel-coloured buildings symmetrically placed around the square. The finest of these buildings is the church St-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg, a beautiful neoclassical church of the 19th century.
